VolkTerm icon, a firefly For people who run coding agents

Run ten coding agents.
See whose move it is.

VolkTerm is a Mac terminal for running many coding agents at once. Claude Code, Codex, Pi and OpenCode side by side in tiles, each saying whether it works, waits for you or is done. They keep going after a dropped connection or a spent limit, come back after a reboot, and answer to your phone.

brew tap baffolobill/tap && brew trust baffolobill/tap && brew install --cask volkterm

Apple silicon and Intel · macOS 14 or later · free to use; a license adds the rest.

Agents at work

Every agent says whose move it is, keeps going after a dropped connection or a spent limit, and moves to another subscription mid-task.

  • Whose move. Working, waiting for you or done on every row; one key jumps to the one that asks.
  • Continue by themselves after a lost connection, an overloaded API or a spent limit. License
  • Continue as another subscription when one runs out mid-task. License
  • Subscriptions at a glance: 5-hour and weekly use, resets, and who runs on which.
02

Tiles and windows

A workspace is a screen of tiles you drag into place. Groups, a reading column, a pinned session, windows on every monitor.

  • Drag tiles by the header, like editors in VS Code; even out columns or rows.
  • Pin a session on top of every workspace, live.
  • Move to another window while it runs; windows return to their monitors.
  • Groups, a reading column, a dashboard of up to nine sessions.
Workspaces in groups, four agents tiled in one workspace, the file tree beside them.

Sessions that survive

Restart the Mac or update the app and every agent comes back where it was. Claude Code and Codex reopen their conversation; a checkpoint moves the lot to another Mac.

  • The exact command, tokens and flags included, with the conversation resumed.
  • Live sessions keep agents running through a quit or an update.
  • Checkpoints hourly and at quit; export one with its conversations to another Mac.
04

Files and questions

A file tree, a preview and the VS Code editor beside the tiles. Answer an agent in its own file, ask a side agent about a file.

  • Answer in the file: ⌘-click the path an agent prints, write, ⌘↩.
  • Ask a side agent about part of a spec, in the split beside it. License
  • A file tree and the VS Code editor with a diff; a file changed on disk under your edits says so instead of being overwritten.
An agent wrote a spec with open questions. ⌘-click its path and answer in place.

Phone and tablet

Every session as a chat on the iPhone and iPad. Start a message on the phone and finish it at the desk.

  • Every session as a chat on iPhone and iPad; without a license the phone sees the top session and those it opened. License
  • Start on the phone, finish at the desk: drafts follow you.
  • Photos and files to the agent, voice answers, several Macs at once.
  • Peer-to-peer at home, through an encrypted relay elsewhere; run your own relay if you prefer.

The phone app

The phone app has no public download link yet. Pairing works from VolkTerm ▸ Pair Phone… once you have it.

06

Make it yours

Plugins, four interface languages, over 600 themes, a keymap, hooks and proxies. Apple silicon and Intel.

  • Plugins add menu items, title-bar buttons and sidebar widgets.
  • English, Russian, German and Simplified Chinese for the interface.
  • Proxies for VolkTerm and for agents, per agent command if you like; themes, keymap, hooks.
  • Apple silicon and Intel; updates install from inside the app, Homebrew or not.
07

Scriptable

volktermctl drives almost everything and reads it back. The bundled skill teaches it to your agent.

  • volktermctl types into sessions, reads their text, opens overlays and asks questions.
  • The bundled skill teaches your agent to build its own layout.
  • 39 recipes in the cookbook to copy and edit.

Which one is you?

You hit the limit

The agent continues by itself when the window resets or the network is back, and Continue as carries the conversation to another subscription.

You leave the desk while agents work

Every session is a chat on your iPhone and iPad: the agent asks, your phone tells you, you tap the answer or say it.

You are switching terminals

Keep your shell, your theme and your keys: import iTerm2 and Ghostty themes, rebind every key, keep zsh. Ghostty’s engine underneath.

You use more than one agent

Claude Code, Codex, Pi and OpenCode side by side, and recipes for Copilot, Kiro and Kimi. They run on your own subscriptions.

At your desk

VolkTerm

Run agents on your Mac, watch them in tiles, answer them when they ask, from the desk or the phone.

Install

With Homebrew:

brew tap baffolobill/tap
brew trust baffolobill/tap
brew install --cask volkterm

The cask installs volktermctl too. VolkTerm checks for a new release once a day; one click in the title bar installs it, and agents in Live sessions keep running through it.

After the first launch

  1. Install the agent status hooksHelp ▸ Install Agent Status Hooks. Claude Code, Codex, Pi and OpenCode report working, waiting and done.
  2. Name your agent commandsSettings ▸ Agents: a name and a command line each, such as a second Claude account.
  3. Put the CLI on your PATH, teach your agentHelp ▸ Install Command Line Tool… and Install Agent Skill (Homebrew did the first).
  4. Pair your phoneVolkTerm ▸ Pair Phone… shows a QR code to scan with the phone app.
  5. Paste your license, if you have oneVolkTerm ▸ License…

Before you install

Which agents does it work with?

Any that runs in a terminal. Status is wired for Claude Code, Codex, Pi and OpenCode; the cookbook adds Copilot, Kiro and Kimi.

What happens after the Mac restarts?

Windows and sessions come back. A clean quit records each pane’s command, and on the next launch each pane runs it again: Claude Code and Codex resume their conversations. After a power loss or a force quit nothing is recorded, so panes open as fresh shells in their folders.

Does updating VolkTerm stop my agents?

No. Live sessions run outside the app: VolkTerm quits, updates and reattaches. An update that changes the session host says so before you install it, because it needs a reset that stops the work running in those sessions.

Do I need Homebrew?

Homebrew is how this page installs VolkTerm today; a .dmg download is not offered here yet. Updates install from inside the app after checking that they are signed like the copy you run. Releases are signed but not notarized by Apple yet; Homebrew takes the one step that a copy from elsewhere needs on first launch.

Is it an ADE?

If you call it an agentic development environment, yes: a terminal, a multiplexer and an agent layer in one app. Think of it also as a multi-agent terminal, or a tmux, iTerm2 or Warp alternative for running Claude Code and Codex in parallel.

Does the phone work without a license?

Yes, with a limit: without a license a paired phone sees the top session and those it opened; with one it sees every session.

What does the phone see of my Mac?

The phone connects peer-to-peer, through an encrypted relay when it must; you can run your own relay. Its requests pass through volktermctl remote-gate, which lets through only the few commands the app uses; it is no shell.

How is it related to agterm?

VolkTerm started as a fork of agterm by Umputun and keeps all of it, then added tiles, groups, exact restore, subscriptions, the phone app and much more. It installs next to agterm without sharing anything.

What does a license add?

VolkTerm works without one. A license adds what saves time when several agents and subscriptions are at work: more than 6 sessions open at once, agents that continue by themselves after a lost connection or a spent limit, Continue as, side agents that answer questions about a file, stage boards, an agent resumed in a session reopened from the history, an agent’s context kept small, and every session on the phone instead of the top one. Without a license those items stay in the menus and say so when used. Nothing already open is ever closed.

Thanks

Built on agterm by Umputun and its contributors (MIT), the base of everything here.

Ghostty (MIT) does the real terminal work.

Rook and aohoyd/agterm. The file tree and the first Markdown preview came from Rook by @jokius, the session color from aohoyd/agterm by Alexey Olshanskiy.

The preview uses Monaco, markdown-it and github-markdown-css.
